I. Ilf and E. Petrov completed the novel "Twelve Chairs" in 1928, but even before the first publication the censors reduced, "cleaned" it. The edit continued from publication to publication for another ten years. As a result, the book decreased by almost a third. The version published now is the first complete one, which has been reconstructed from archival materials. The book is equipped with an extensive historical and literary and real commentary.
